In an ancient dark forest, Leo was nine and deaf, his world a landscape of vibrations, never sound. This made him unaware of the rustling dangers that kept other children away from the 'Banshee's Path'.
Today, he was hunting for skipping stones near the dried-up creek. He followed a tangle of mossy rootst to a small clearing, resting on a flat pale stone he found her. She was a doll. Her long, black hair was matted and wild. But it was her face that fascinated him. It was bone-white, and from her eyes, thick black tears ran down her cheeks. Her mouth was a dark abyss, frozen in a silent scream.
Leo felt a deep sadness coming from the doll, not fear. He saw the black tears as pain. He approached and gently picked her up. The wood around him pulsed violently as the doll unleashed a wail that would have shattered the sanity of any hearing person. Leo felt nothing but a powerful, vibrating thrum in his chest. He misinterpreted it as the doll’s heart beating.
He cradled the doll against his chest. Ignoring the dark, tangled roots that seemed to reach for his ankles, Leo began the long walk home, determined to fix his new, broken friend. He did not know that he was carrying the very doll that would destroy his entire village.
This doll was later found in the attic of an old house in a "abandoned" town. After owning this doll for a short time, I believe it is only a matter of time before she becomes restless again.
